Remote Not Responding

If your presentation remote or Bluetooth camera remote isn’t advancing cards in BlackboardView, work through this checklist. Most issues come down to pairing or the remote being in the wrong mode.

Step-by-Step Checklist

1. Confirm the Remote Is Paired and Connected

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth on your iPad.
  2. Check that your remote appears in the device list and shows as Connected, not just “Not Connected” or “Paired” without an active connection.
  3. If it’s not connected, tap it to reconnect. If it’s not listed at all, you’ll need to pair it again — check your remote’s manual for how to enter pairing mode.

2. Confirm You’re Actually in a Teaching Session

Remotes only control card navigation while a lesson is actively being taught (that is, after you’ve tapped Start). If you’re still on the Home screen or a preview screen, remote button presses won’t do anything.

3. Check Your Remote’s Mode Switch

Many remotes — especially ones that came with a small switch or mode button — can be set to different modes for different uses (for example, a “Mouse” mode vs. a “Presentation” mode, or different device-type profiles). Make sure your remote is set to standard presentation mode (arrow keys / page keys) or, for camera-style remotes, its normal shutter/volume mode — not a mode meant for a different kind of app.

4. Check the Remote’s Battery

A low or dead battery is a common, easy-to-overlook cause of an unresponsive remote. Replace or recharge the battery and try again.

5. Try Pressing More Slowly

If you’re using a Bluetooth camera-style remote (Volume Up/Down), keep in mind there’s a brief required pause between button presses before the next one registers — this is intentional, to avoid accidentally counting one press as two. If you’re pressing the button very rapidly multiple times, try slowing down slightly and pressing once, then waiting a moment before pressing again.

6. Re-Pair the Remote

If nothing else works, forget the device and pair it fresh:

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth.
  2. Tap the small “i” icon next to your remote.
  3. Tap Forget This Device.
  4. Put the remote back into pairing mode and pair it again from scratch.

7. Restart Your iPad

As a last resort, a full restart of your iPad often resolves stubborn Bluetooth connection issues that reconnecting alone doesn’t fix.

Still Not Working?

If you’ve tried everything above and your remote still isn’t advancing cards, reach out through this support site’s Help button, or see our FAQ for other ways to get in touch. It’s helpful to let us know the brand/model of your remote and which steps you’ve already tried.
