Volume Buttons Aren't Advancing Cards
SpeakerView supports two different families of Bluetooth remotes, and they work in two completely different ways. If your remote isn’t controlling the app, the most common cause is having the wrong type of remote in mind for how it actually works — or a stale Bluetooth connection.
First, know which kind of remote you have

Camera shutter remotes are the ones that use the volume buttons to navigate — that’s the whole trick behind them, and it’s why this doc exists. Checklist for camera shutter remotes (volume-button remotes)
- Confirm it’s paired. Go to iPhone Settings → Bluetooth and make sure your remote shows “Connected,” not just “Not Connected” or listed but greyed out.
- Make sure you’re inside an active presentation. SpeakerView only listens for volume-button presses while you’re on the full-screen cue card view (after tapping Start Presentation) — not on the home screen or in Settings.
- Press and release firmly, one click at a time. SpeakerView anchors your iPhone’s volume to a fixed low level and watches for the remote nudging it up (advance) or down (go back), then resets it. Rapid double-clicks within less than half a second of each other can be swallowed by this reset — if a remote press seems to do nothing, wait a beat and press again rather than clicking repeatedly.
- Check you don’t also have a physical volume button pressed accidentally. If you’re holding your phone in a case that presses a volume button, that can interfere with the anchoring.
“The volume HUD (the volume slider) pops up on screen when I press the remote”
During a normal presentation this shouldn’t happen — SpeakerView suppresses the on-screen volume indicator while a presentation is active. If you’re seeing it, make sure you’re actually inside the presentation view (not the home screen), and that you’re running the current version of the app.
“My physical volume buttons don’t work like normal while presenting”
This is expected and intentional. While a presentation is active, SpeakerView takes over the volume buttons so they can be used for remote navigation, which means they temporarily won’t adjust media/ringer volume. This returns to normal the moment you exit the presentation.
