External Display Not Showing
If your projector or TV is blank, stuck on the idle splash screen, or not showing your lesson content, work through this checklist in order. Most issues are resolved by one of the first few steps.
First, Understand What’s Normal
Before troubleshooting, it helps to know what BlackboardView is supposed to do:
- The external screen shows a simple idle splash screen (just the BlackboardView logo and name) whenever you have not yet tapped Start on a lesson — this is expected, not a malfunction.
- Once you tap Start, the external screen should switch to showing your Blackboard content for the current card.
So the first question to ask is: did I actually tap Start? It’s an easy step to forget, especially if you’re used to the projector “just working” automatically.
Step-by-Step Checklist
1. Confirm You’ve Tapped Start
Open BlackboardView, load your lesson, and make sure you’ve tapped Start to begin the teaching session — not just imported or previewed the lesson. The external screen only leaves the idle splash screen once a session is actively running.
2. Check Your Physical Connection (HDMI)
If you’re using an HDMI cable:
- Confirm the adapter is fully plugged into your iPad’s charging port.
- Confirm the HDMI cable is fully plugged into both the adapter and the projector/TV.
- Confirm your projector or TV is switched to the correct HDMI input (many projectors have multiple HDMI ports — try the others if the first doesn’t work).
- Try unplugging and replugging the cable at both ends.
3. Check Your Wireless Connection (AirPlay / Screen Mirroring)
If you’re using AirPlay:
- Confirm your iPad and the Apple TV (or receiver) are on the same Wi-Fi network. If your school has multiple Wi-Fi networks (for example, a staff network and a student network), this is a common cause of AirPlay failing.
- Open Control Center on your iPad and check Screen Mirroring — confirm it shows your classroom display as actively connected, not just available.
- If the connection dropped, tap Screen Mirroring again and reselect your display.
4. Confirm the Current Card Actually Has Blackboard Content
Remember: a card with no >>> marker at all in the lesson file is treated as
notes-only, with a blank blackboard for that card on purpose (see
The Lesson File Format). If your projector
appears blank on a specific card, check whether that card’s notes were written without
a >>> separator — this isn’t a malfunction, it just means that particular card has
nothing to show on the blackboard.
5. Restart the App
Close BlackboardView completely (swipe it away from your iPad’s app switcher) and reopen it. Reconnect your display if needed, reload your lesson, and tap Start again.
6. Restart Your iPad
If nothing above has resolved it, a full restart of your iPad can clear up a stuck display connection. Reconnect your projector or AirPlay display after restarting.
